Lesson # 95 - Custom Classes and Dragons

Lesson # 95 - Custom Classes and Dragons

Author: Block Party Podcast Network September 16, 2019 Duration: 31:56

On this lesson of Detentions and Dragons, Josh and Matt discuss custom classes. The official classes are solid, customizable, and great for any game. However, what if you are looking to fill an esoteric niche not traditionally offered by the available classes. That's where the custom classes come in! Over his summer vacation, Matt worked on a custom class. He learned a lot and wanted to share his tips for making custom classes with the listeners! With a lot of effort, knowledge of game mechanics, and passion, any eager DM can make their own custom class for their D&D world.

This episode also leads to an important announcement:

Matt just released his homebrewed class, the Teacher Class, on The DMs Guild as a fundraiser for Game to Grow!

His supplement is a homebrewed class for those looking to play a teacher in a Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition setting! This supplement includes:

  • Custom Starting Class Features for your Level 1 Teacher.

  • Homebrewed Class Features, up through level 20, such as Teacher Guidance, Teacher's Lounge, and Inspirational Speech to help your teacher triumph through the perils of the many fantasy worlds of D&D.

  • Two Subclasses – Elementary Education or High School Education

  • Humor that will resonate with basically any educator.

  • No custom spells because I had to write curriculum for my job as a high school teacher.

Matt's profits from the sales of this product will go to Game to Grow. If you don't know who they are you should definitely check out our interview episode with Adam and Adam from Game to Grow.

Ever wondered how the collaborative storytelling of a tabletop roleplaying game could transform a classroom or simply enrich your own game night? That’s the territory explored in Detentions and Dragons, hosted by Josh and Matt. While the core idea is built around integrating Dungeons and Dragons into educational settings, the conversations extend far beyond the school walls. The hosts delve into practical advice for crafting manageable adventures, adapting rules for different age groups, and using game mechanics to teach everything from critical thinking to social skills. You’ll hear specific examples of classroom campaigns, breakdowns of educational concepts framed as game mechanics, and reflections on what makes a collaborative narrative truly engaging. Whether you're an educator looking for a dynamic new tool, a brand new Dungeon Master seeking foundational tips, or a longtime player curious about the game's applied potential, this podcast offers a unique perspective. It’s a biweekly show that takes a summer break, giving hosts and listeners time to recharge and plan their next campaigns. Detentions and Dragons is part of the Block Party Podcast Network, focusing on the tangible ways a fantasy game can build real-world skills and community, making the podcast a resource that’s as informative as it is genuinely fun to listen to.
