Thanks for checking out episode 19 of Drum For The Song podcast featuring the awesome Charlie Benante, drummer of Anthrax and S.O.D. We had a great conversation and discussed his early musical influences, the drummers that influenced him the most, learning to play guitar to put his ideas across to the rest of Anthrax and writing most of the guitar parts for their discography, developing the speed/thrash metal style and being the first drummer to record a blast beat on a record! We also talked about different bass drum techniques and settings to develop speed, his carpal tunnel injury and recovery and how he warms up before a show.

Charlie also explains how he got depressed from watching the news too much in 2020 and how kept busy during the lockdowns recording cover songs with his friends and why he has decided to release an album of these recordings called 'Silver Linings' released on MAY 14th - available on vinyl and digital platforms only. He also talked about his album and merch artwork but also how he has recently been displaying his art at exhibitions with his girlfriend Carla Harvey from the band Butcher Babies. Charlie also described how he got into releasing his own blend of coffee. Charlie also described why he has remained loyal to the drum companies he has endorsed since 1986 with exception of switching to Evans Drumheads after trying them out at a recording studio. Charlie uses Tama drums, Vic Firth drumsticks and Paiste cymbals. Find out Charlie's opinion on using bass drum triggers plus he also answers a few questions from some of my amazing Patrons at www.patreon.com/drumforthesong

Behind every great song is a rhythm that holds it together, often created by a drummer whose name you might not know. Drum For The Song Podcast, hosted by working musician Dane Campbell, pulls back the curtain on these essential artists. Rather than focusing on technical jargon or gear, the conversations explore the personal journeys, creative decisions, and historical contexts that shape a drummer's unique voice. Dane, who plays in Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons and Straight Lines, brings a peer's perspective to long-form interviews with semi-professional and professional drummers from across the world. A core mission of this independent podcast is celebration-spotlighting incredibly talented players who rarely feature in mainstream drum magazines or on popular websites. These are the musicians who provide the backbone for countless recordings and tours, yet their stories remain largely untold. You'll hear about the pivotal moments in their careers, the albums that shaped them, and the practical realities of building a life in music. While drummers will naturally find a deep connection here, the discussions are crafted for anyone curious about the creative process, music history, and the human elements behind the instrument. It’s about the person behind the kit, the thinking that goes into a simple groove or a complex fill, and how that ultimately serves the music. Each episode is an invitation to appreciate the art of drumming not as an isolated skill, but as a fundamental, narrative force in the songs we love.
