Practicing with Fear & Anxiety

Practicing with Fear & Anxiety

Author: Amy Kisei August 2, 2023 Duration: 32:46

Part of being human is that we have big emotional responses or have emotional responses. There is nothing wrong with having emotional responses. What often happens is that we are afraid of feeling our emotions. We are afraid of our fear.

Parts-work has one way of languaging this that I have found helpful, buddhism has another way which I also feel is helpful.

In parts-work language: parts of us got the message when we were young that it wasn’t OK to be afraid, or sad, or needy, or ashamed. So the parts that feel these emotions are often quite young and quite shunned in our inner system. Other parts learned how to manage our emotions or protect our system from feeling overwhelmed by these emotions by doing the various things we do to distract ourselves from the present moment, from the embodied emotional experience that is happening.

This can be anything from working hard, to eating, to phone scrolling, to partying, to spacing out, to anger outbursts, to exercise, shopping, etc… even some forms of meditation–take us out for a while. These strategies aren’t bad, and you can see there is a spectrum of skillful - unskillful responses.

Hosted by Zen teacher Amy Kisei, Earth Dreams: Zen Buddhism and the Soul of the World is a quiet space for exploring what it means to be truly awake in a living, dreaming world. Rather than treating spiritual practice as a retreat from daily life, this podcast gently examines how the core insights of Zen-interconnection, non-separation, and our original nature of freedom-are intimately woven into our dreams, our relationship with the earth, and our sense of soul. Each episode feels like a thoughtful conversation, where ancient teachings meet the raw material of our inner lives and the ecological world around us. You’ll hear Kisei’s reflections on how dreamwork can be a surprising ally on the path of awakening, revealing our deep entanglement with the cosmos. The aim here isn’t abstract philosophy, but a palpable sense of how these liberating perspectives can reshape our experience of reality itself. Tuning into this podcast offers a rare blend of grounded spirituality, where the soul of the world speaks through both silence and symbol, inviting a more creative and loving engagement with existence. It’s for anyone curious about how the heart of Zen Buddhism illuminates our most profound connections.
