Everyday Buddhism 66 - Buddhist Spiritual Friendship as a UU Pastor with Pamela Patton

Everyday Buddhism 66 - Buddhist Spiritual Friendship as a UU Pastor with Pamela Patton

Author: Wendy Shinyo Haylett February 7, 2022 Duration: 1:36:16

In this podcast, I talk with Pamela Patton, Director of Pastoral Ministries for All Souls NYC. Pamela is a both a Unitarian Universalist and a Buddhist and she founded the Buddhism and Mindfulness program at the popular Unitarian Universalist church, All Souls, in Manhattan.

In a wide-reaching conversation, we talked—among other things—about how important it is to keep your own practice strong if you want to help others. I think this is just as important for all of us to keep in mind, as it is for Pastoral Ministers.

I asked her what was one of the major issues people came to her to talk about with her over her tenure as a minister. She said, "connection." This just emphasizes how important connection has always been, even before the pandemic when we've all felt disconnected from each other.

This is such an important theme in Buddhism because, as we know, not only are we social beings, we are all interconnected or "interbeing" as the late Thich Nhat Hanh coined.

You might find yourself wondering how ancient Buddhist principles could possibly fit into the rush of a modern workday or the quiet complexities of your personal relationships. Everyday Buddhism: Making Everyday Better explores exactly that, without pretense or esoteric jargon. Hosted by Wendy Shinyo Haylett, who brings her perspective as an author, teacher, and behavioral coach, each conversation feels like a practical dialogue. The ideas discussed aren't about retreating from the world, but about engaging with it more skillfully and with less personal turmoil. You'll hear how mindfulness and compassion translate into actionable strategies for dealing with stress, communication breakdowns, and the general noise of daily life. This podcast treats Buddhist teachings as a lived experience, offering reflections and methods that feel immediately applicable. Whether you're well-versed in spirituality or simply curious, Wendy’s guidance is grounded and clear, focusing on the tangible ways these age-old insights can create more space and resilience. Tune in for a thoughtful companion on the path to making each day a little more manageable and meaningful.
