Exegetically Speaking
Luke reports that Jesus, in the days following his resurrection but before his ascension, presented himself alive by many convincing proofs, "appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God" (NRSV). Grammatically and contextually, it turns out, a "proof" is not merely a given historical fact about Jesus, but what is said about it as a fulfillment of the Scriptures. Dr. J. D. Atkins is Associate Professor of New Testament Language and Literature, and Chair of the Department of Biblical and Exegetical Studies at Tyndale Theological Seminary (Netherlands). Among other things he has authored, The Doubt of the Apostles and the Resurrection Faith of the Early Church. His co-authored book, Forty Questions about the Gospels, is forthcoming with Kregel. This episode is a continuation of Dr. Atkins' two earlier episodes also entitled "Seeing is Not Believing (Luke 24:41-45)."
