Episode 303: For the Love of the Game

Author: Aaron Tobin-Hess October 16, 2025 Duration: 2:08:25
Absolutely packed episode since the last one; lots to discuss. We start with Week 6 in the NFL which was a terrible slate of games and the NY Jets were the worst of the worst (2:59); the Jets are an affront to NFL Football and everyone (the QB, the coach) stinks. On the flip side- the NY Giants beat the defending champion Eagles and there is hope again in Giants land (7:27). Around the NFL- shout out to Baker Mayfield- the best story in the NFL, the Steelers are somehow good and KC will likely win 12 games again (12:32). Monologue concludes with another case of LeBron James being a jackass (15:56). Then a recurring guest is back to preview the Eastern Conference and do over/under wins picks (17:53) and then another recurring guest is back to talk about the NY Yankees exit from the playoffs and their future followed by a plug for his NY Islanders (1:22:15).

Aaron Tobin-Hess brings a distinct voice to the crowded world of sports talk, shaped by his own journey as a former Division III athlete. In For the Love of the Game, he digs into the narratives that fuel our obsession, from the major professional leagues to the passionate world of college sports. This isn't just a recap of scores; it's a deep dive into the culture, the business, and the often-overlooked human stories behind the highlights. Aaron has, as he puts it, tons of opinions on everything under the sun in sports, and he delivers them with a blend of insight and self-awareness-he might fancy himself a savant, but he happily leaves that for you to decide. Each episode feels like a conversation with a deeply knowledgeable friend who isn't afraid to challenge conventional wisdom. You'll hear analysis that connects the dots between society, fandom, and what happens on the field or court. As part of the Overtime Media network, this podcast delivers your sport and your team on your time, focusing on the elements that make sports endlessly debatable and personally meaningful. If you're looking for a sports podcast that prioritizes perspective and personality over bland commentary, Aaron's passionate and opinionated take is well worth a listen.
