Ben Rich on weather and the conversation about climate change in the UK

Author: Gemma Plumb & Aisling Creevey October 23, 2024 Duration: 54:24

Meet Ben Rich - presenter, meteorologist and journalist. Ben can’t remember when he didn’t love the weather. Growing up in south-west England meant from a young age he understood how quickly the weather could change. He says his mother tells him he was obsessed with the time and maps and so broadcasting the weather seemed like the only road for Ben.

Ben worked through the record breaking heat in the UK where 40 degrees Celsius made the headlines. He says it was a profound moment that impacted him emotionally as the reality of a changing climate is now more evident than ever in weather broadcasts.

The discussion of climate change is an important one and Ben says that engaging with all types of audience is so important in communicating the reality of climate change and simply telling someone ‘you’re wrong is not the answer’.

Listen on to hear a beautiful discussion on all things weather and how we move on communicating climate change in the news. You can also learn a little more about Ben’s favourite cloud and who he would take to dinner and why the only option for him would be a cocktail on a beach.

Ever find yourself actually enjoying a rainy afternoon or wondering why a certain cloud looks the way it does? You're not alone. For the love of weather is the ongoing conversation between meteorologists Gemma Plumb and Aisling Creevey, who have spent over fifteen years forecasting across the UK. This podcast captures the kind of deep-dive chats they've been having for years, moving far beyond simple small talk. They pull back the curtain on what weather really means for our daily lives, drawing on a surprising range of experience. Their professional paths have seen them predicting conditions for everything from major music festivals and national rail networks to agricultural harvests and even ice cream demand, giving them a unique perspective on how the atmosphere connects to the ground beneath our feet. Each episode feels like sitting with two experts who are still genuinely fascinated by their subject, discussing the science behind a storm front, the challenges of a long-range forecast, or how a shift in the wind can change an entire industry's plans. It's a look at the patterns and stories in the sky, grounded in the reality of jobs, life changes, and a shared curiosity that hasn't faded. Tune in for a human take on the forces that shape our days.
