In this episode of For the Love of Weather, we are joined by Chief Meteorologist and Climate Specialist Jeff Berardelli for a fascinating conversation about hurricanes, climate communication and one of the world's most recognisable climate visuals, the Climate Stripes.

Jeff is a broadcast meteorologist for WFLA News Channel 8 Tampa Bay as well as being a fountain of knowledge about hurricanes, climate change and the power of great science communication.

Jeff reflects on his lifelong passion for weather, from growing up fascinated by snowstorms in New York to forecasting hurricanes in Florida. He explains how first-hand experience of sea level rise in Miami and increasingly extreme weather led him to retrain with a master's degree in climate science at Columbia University before becoming one of the first network meteorologists in the United States to combine weather forecasting with dedicated climate reporting.

🌍 In this episode, we chat about...

🌀 How climate change is influencing tropical cyclones , from stronger hurricanes to more frequent rapid intensification.

📱 The challenge of communicating weather and climate in a world of social media, misinformation and information overload.

🌈 The story behind the Climate Stripes and how Jeff recognised the power of Professor Ed Hawkins' simple but striking visualisation of global warming.

🤝 Launching Show Your Stripes Day; Jeff worked with Ed Hawkins and Climate Central to encourage meteorologists around the world to share their local climate stripes on TV and online.

🌎 What started as a campaign for weather broadcasters quickly grew into an international initiative embraced by scientists, organisations and the public to spark conversations about climate change.

Throughout the episode, Jeff argues that meteorologists have a unique responsibility to explain the links between weather and climate, helping audiences understand not just what the weather will do today, but how our changing climate is reshaping the future. Each episode feels like sitting with two experts who are still genuinely fascinated by their subject, discussing the science behind a storm front, the challenges of a long-range forecast, or how a shift in the wind can change an entire industry's plans. It's a look at the patterns and stories in the sky, grounded in the reality of jobs, life changes, and a shared curiosity that hasn't faded. Tune in for a human take on the forces that shape our days.
