S4E1 – Roots of American Cancel Culture

S4E1 – Roots of American Cancel Culture

Author: Governed by God September 6, 2023 Duration: 37:29
To start off this season, I look at the writings of Alexis de Tocqueville, specifically his work Democracy in America written in the 1830s. Today I consider his chapter on omnipotence and tyranny of the majority. In democracy, we say that majority rules. But what restrains the majority from abusing their power? What about when the majority opinion is formed? How are those who go against the majority treated? Tocqueville answers those questions while also describing what we would call the roots of cancel culture in America. Now, almost two hundred years later, the roots of cancel culture have produced the fruit. As always, if you have any law/government related questions, feel free to email me at thegbgpodcast@gmail.com, and I will be happy to address them on the program. Thank you and God bless! How should a person of faith understand the world of laws, politics, and civic duty? Governed by God explores that very question, offering a thoughtful and scripture-based examination of civil government and our role within it. This isn't about partisan politics, but rather a foundational look at how biblical principles intersect with the structures of human authority. Each episode digs into topics of law and civics, seeking to frame contemporary issues through a timeless lens. The host welcomes engagement, often addressing listener questions directly in the show, which adds a personal and practical dimension to the discussions. If you've ever wondered how your spiritual convictions inform your view of citizenship, justice, or societal order, this podcast provides a space for that exploration. Tune in for conversations that are both intellectually grounded and deeply rooted in Christian thought, challenging you to consider the intersection of divine truth and human governance.
