Your big moment runs on private work: the months of effort nobody sees while you wonder why you keep showing up. At the inaugural Dodge NHRA Great Lakes Nationals, a record-breaking day of drag racing proved it.

Episode Description

A rainout washed away Shelly Rood's anniversary plans at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan. She went back the next day with her 16-year-old son, and together they watched Shawn Langdon run 346.95 mph, the fastest pass in NHRA history, then top 346 again in the final to win the event.

Shelly takes listeners into the pits, the packed Monday grandstands, and the smell of nitro and burned rubber. Then she pulls back the curtain on the private work behind the record: track upgrades finished months before race day, a crew that stopped to find the one problem haunting their car, and a racer who was ready to quit days before he held the trophy.

As a veteran, Shelly also signed Daniel Wilkerson's Funny Car through SCAG Racing's Simply The Brave program, then watched from the stands as her name raced down the track.
