In this true story of the Harlem Renaissance in the Soviet Union, we are introduced to the young writer and actress Dorothy West and her mother, Rachel West, who wants to hear all about her daughter’s year in Moscow making a film.    Rachel is especially curious about the famous poet Langston Hughes.   Dorothy promises to tell all that and more, starting with the invitation for the trip that she received from her sweetheart and local reporter, Henry Lee Moon. After failing to convince her cousin, Helene Johnson, to accompany her, Dorothy sets sail with Henry Lee and 20 other Harlemites to the other side of the world, with no idea what this new world has in store for her.

Step into a forgotten corridor of history where art, ideology, and identity collide. Harlem & Moscow is an immersive audio drama from theGrio that uncovers the remarkable true story of a cultural exchange that never made the textbooks. In 1932, at the height of the Harlem Renaissance, a group of pioneering Black artists, writers, and activists embarked on an audacious journey to the Soviet Union. Their mission was to create a film exposing American racism, a project they believed could spark a revolution. This podcast follows their complex experience, from the vibrant creative circles of New York to the stark, promising, and unfamiliar landscape of Stalin’s Russia. You’ll hear the tensions and hopes of figures like the talented, up-and-coming writer Dorothy West as they navigate a world offering artistic freedom but shrouded in political uncertainty. Each episode blends historical narrative with rich sound design, pulling you directly into the cramped ship cabins, bustling Moscow streets, and intense creative debates that defined this unlikely chapter. More than just a history lesson, it’s an exploration of the universal search for belonging and the power of art as a tool for change. This is the story of what happens when a movement travels to the other side of the world, and the personal and political reverberations that followed them home. Discover America’s best-kept literary secret in this compelling podcast.
