Heavy Metal News & Interviews: The Loaded Radio Podcast
Dream Theater fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Parasomnia, the progressive metal icons' latest full-length album, and now that it's here, it's proving to be one of their most compelling releases in years. With the return of founding drummer Mike Portnoy and a fresh creative energy flowing through the band, Parasomnia not only marks a reunion but also signals an exciting new chapter in Dream Theater's storied career.
On this episode of The Loaded Radio Podcast, host Scott Penfold sits down with Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie for an in-depth conversation about the making of Parasomnia, the themes behind its haunting and immersive sound, and what it was like having Portnoy back behind the kit after nearly a decade and a half.
Parasomnia, which arrived on February 7, 2025, via InsideOut Music, is the band's first release with Portnoy since 2009's Black Clouds & Silver Linings. The album, produced by guitarist John Petrucci and mixed by Andy Sneap, explores eerie and unsettling dream states, weaving together complex rhythms, intricate melodies, and soaring vocals.
From the opening moments of In The Arms of Morpheus to the epic closer The Shadow Man Incident, the record is a journey through subconscious fears, sleep paralysis, and the bizarre world of dreams. Tracks like A Broken Man, Dead Asleep, Midnight Messiah, and Bend The Clock further build upon these themes, making for an album that's as cinematic as it is musically intricate. The first single, Night Terror, is a nearly ten-minute thrill ride that perfectly captures the essence of the record's dark undertones.
Of course, one of the biggest talking points surrounding Parasomnia is Mike Portnoy's return. After a 14-year absence, the founding drummer is back, and his chemistry with the band remains undeniable. But with that, Mike Mangini, who had been an integral part of the band since 2010, stepped away, making for an emotional transition.
In this interview, LaBrie gives insight into how the band navigated that change, what it's been like having Portnoy's energy back in the studio, and how it's influencing the band's creative process moving forward.
With Parasomnia now out in the world, what's next for Dream Theater? A massive tour is on the horizon, but beyond that, LaBrie teases what's in store for the band's evolving sound and future projects. Could this be the beginning of a new golden era for the progressive metal legends?
