Cod Moratorium | 142

Cod Moratorium | 142

Author: Kathy Kenzora August 20, 2025 Duration: 31:07

In July 1992 the Canadian government banned cod fishing along Newfoundland’s east coast in an effort to help restore cod stocks that had been depleted due to overfishing.

The moratorium was supposed to last 18 months but ended up being extended indefinitely.

The collapse of the industry ended nearly five centuries of cod fishing, led to the largest industrial layoff in Canada, devastated Newfoundland’s economy and shook the province’s identity to the core.

This isn't just a nostalgia trip; it's a deep, thoughtful excavation of the decade that built our modern world. Host Kathy Kenzora guides listeners through a complex tapestry, weaving together pivotal moments from the tragic to the triumphant, the frivolous to the foundational. You'll hear about the legal battles of Ruth Bader Ginsburg alongside the global pop conquest of the Spice Girls, the seismic impact of Columbine contrasted with the unifying humor of *Seinfeld*, and the athletic revolution of Air Jordan.
