Veteran Unschooling Moms Q&A

Are you new to unschooling? Does it sound like a beautiful concept, to support your children in their natural, non-rushed learning process? But yet, are you still having a hard time wrapping your head around it?

What about the unschooled teens? What happens to the families that have unschooled all of their lives? Or for a major portion of their young lives into adulthood? How do they turn out?

This episode features 5 veteran unschooling moms that I invited to my Homeschool Club on the Clubhouse app to answer questions about unschooling. I wanted to share the perspectives of parents that have been at this unschooling thing for a while. I wanted to bring knowledge and experience to the table. These are moms that I know, respect and have learned from myself.

Veteran Unschooling Moms

This is who joined the discussion...

Sue Patterson of UnschoolingMom2Mom. Sue is mom to 3 grown Unschoolers, an Unschooling Coach and podcaster that offers wonderful insight.

Karema Akilah of The Genius School is an unschooling mom to 6. Her children started out traditionally homeschooling until their "delight driven afternoons" became the primary focus and learning began to take on much more personal meaning.

Missy Willis of Let Em Go Barefoot is an unschooling mom to 2 teens, age 19 and 14. She is a past guest, blogger and peaceful parenting advocate.

Stacey Piercey in an unschooling mom to 3 boys. She is an entrepreneur and part of the Galileo Xp, an online self directed learning platform.

Tira Hunter is mom to an 18 year old unschooled artist. Tira is a regular co-host and moderator in my club on Clubhouse, sharing her knowledge and insights from the years.

And of course, there was myself, as the host. My family are unschoolers and although we did not start out as unschoolers, we slowly made our way to this life learning process over the years. My children are both teens, pursuing their interests and choosing the how, what, where and when of their own learning.

This panel is diverse and engaging.

Unschooling Q&A

We spoke to the unexpected gifts that unschooling brought to each of our families and how they found their way into the unschooling world. We also tackled the questions that are regularly asked because they straddle the line of unschooling, choice and parental direction.

  • Screentime ~ Is it about ownership or is it about boundaries?
  • Strewing
  • Unschooling one child- what about offering enough exposure?
  • How to begin the unschooling process from the teen years?
  • What to do when you (as the parent) just can't seem to let go?
  • How can we best support our children's interests when unschooling?

What other questions about unschooling do you have?
