Growing Up Unschooled

Unschooling- "The freedom for anyone, young and old to choose why, what, when, how and from whom to learn things." It is learner directed, learner centred.

Unschooling may sound like a nice idea, but are you wondering if it is realistic in practice? Can a young child or teen learn that way? Don't they need the structure of school to get a job or go to University? What is it like growing up unschooled?

Liana Francisco~ Growing Up Unschooled

My guest on this episode, Liana Francisco, grew up unschooled. Liana, now an unschooling mom herself, is a serial entrepreneur and coach who helps other moms make plant-based eating easy with a system.

Continuing the unschooling trend, Liana’s path has been unconventional. Liana earned a BA in classical singing and a Master of Public Administration. She spent 12+ years as a government consultant and management executive.

After becoming deeply ill with Lyme Disease, Liana changed her life trajectory and started on a path to help others live intentionally. She had an amazing journey as a vegan deli owner and now runs a wholesale vegan food business, coaches moms to make plant-based eating easy, and just launched a YouTube channel to share how she hacks homemaking for more freedom AND an organized family.

Liana lives in Olympia, WA with her husband and teenage sweetheart, Jonathan, and their four year old son.

In This Episode

In this episode Liana and I discuss what it was like growing up unschooled. We talk about why her family chose the path, why it looked different for each child in the family and the transition into adulthood. And we cover a lot of those questions that many have about unschoolers:

  • What about math?
  • Learning Time management
  • Going to University?
  • Finding a career
  • What would she do differently now that she's an unschooling mom herself?

Liana shares with such genuine, gentle insight. Her perspective is invaluable to any parent, new or old to unschooling and homeschool.
