Homeschool, Adversity and Education with Dr. Carline Crevecoeur

Dr. Carline Crevecoeur is a Haitian American board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist, a wife, and a mother of five adult children.

She was raised in NY and attended St. John’s University as an undergraduate, earning a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. She did her medical school and residency training at SUNY Downstate.

After several years of medical service in New York and Pennsylvania, Carline gave up her career to raise and homeschool her five African American children. Her homeschool journey is told in her new memoir: Pressure Makes Diamonds: From Homeschooling to the Ivy League – A Parenting Story.

She has volunteered on education boards such as WPSU, a local public radio, and NAAHP (National Asso. for the Advancement of Haitian Professionals) and sponsored many public health programs.

Dr. Crevecoeur has recently won her school board election race, making her the first Black person in her school district to do so.

In This Episode

"Education is about life. And life happens."

In this episode Dr. Carline Crevecoeur and I explored our thoughts on parenting, learning, homeschooling, education and school. I know you will enjoy the warmth and heart that Carline brings to our conversations. In this episode you get to learn more about her work, homeschool life and the joy, adversity, grief and acceptance that came along with their experiences. This episode is not only for homeschool parents, but any parents that are looking to do better for their learning community.

Listen in as we talk about honouring the individual child and why sometimes the best we can do for their learning is to get out of their way. We also explore the power of family and community and being a role model within those spaces. For some, it may not seem like we belong but our voices are actually powerful and important. We also talk about Carline's wonderful book, Pressure Makes Diamonds- From Homeschooling To The Ivy League: A Parenting Story

Homeschool, Adversity and Education

I love talking with Carline and here's why I know you will love listening to our conversation;

  • Born in Haiti, Carline immigrated to New York and then raised her family (one a very few black families) in Pennsylvania. Through these experiences she brings diverse perspective.

  • Dr. Carline Crevecoeur is a doctor that decided to leave her practice to homeschool her 5 children because that decision reflected their core values of family, connection and self confidence best. I know it was not an easy decision! But for me, her careful thought and personal reflection on that experience offers insight and a confidence that I appreciate.

  • All of her 5 homeschooled children attended Ivy League schools. You'll hear from Carline what made their homeschool successful. (It was not the schools but the connection and personal confidence that her children built)

  • Carline homeschooled through tough times. She was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer at 49 years of age. Her bravery and outlook on life is encouraging to every one of us. And the perspective she gives as a homeschool mom through fear, pain, grief, struggle and then acceptance is invaluable.
  • She now serves her greater community as a publicly elected school board trustee. All of her previous life and homeschool experiences are now blended with her current role in the public service. To me this seems to only enhance her dedication and heart.
