Catch and Release Myths

Catch and Release Myths

Author: Hank Shaw May 6, 2022 Duration: 1:11:50

I've always had a thing about catch and release; I don't like participating in fisheries where there is no take allowed. (Obviously, I release lots of fish that are undersized or incidental catch though). But my opinion, even though it's based on research, isn't nearly as important to listen to as are the research findings of Stephanie Shaw of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. (And no, we're not related.)

Catch and release is Stephanie's specialty, and together we bust some myths and talk about best practices for catch and release, primarily in freshwater fishing, but relevant to saltwater, too.

Step outside the supermarket and into the landscape with Hunt, Gather, Talk with Hank Shaw. Guided by wild foods expert and cookbook author Hank Shaw, this podcast is an audio journey that follows food to its source, whether that’s through foraging, fishing, or hunting. The conversation goes far beyond the harvest, weaving together the biology, habitat, and cultural lore of wild ingredients before arriving, always, at the kitchen. In one episode, you might learn about the surprising life history of a common game bird, hear nuanced strategies for finding it, and then get practical, inventive advice on how to transform it into an unforgettable meal. The current season offers a sustained exploration of upland game like pheasants, turkeys, quail, and rabbits, giving each subject the deep, respectful attention it deserves. Hank’s approach is both knowledgeable and accessible, making the world of wild food feel tangible and deeply connected to the places we live. Listen to this podcast for a holistic view of what it means to truly know your food, from the field and forest to the plate, all delivered with the warmth and authority of a seasoned guide who genuinely loves to share what he knows.
