149: Ben Gleib

Author: Barry Katz May 30, 2016 Duration: 2:34:54
BEN GLEIB is a comedian, writer, producer, and host who Esquire Magazine called one of "Six Comedians Who Could Be Comedy's Next Big Thing." The other 5 were Aziz Ansari, Patton Oswalt, David Cross, Demetri Martin, and Flight of the Conchords. It came true for each of them, and it now seems to be Gleib's time, as he is now in his third season as the host and executive producer of “Idiotest," the Emmy nominated comedy game show on GSN, which is their most watched original show. (For Gleib, EP is not just a title. He helps create all of the show's brain puzzles.)   Some his more prominent work before “Idiotest,” were as a regular guest and star of over 100 episodes of Chelsea Lately and as a regular on "The Today Show" with Kathie Lee and Hoda, and multiple appearances on Comedy Central's @midnight.   A truly unique voice in comedy, Gleib has been a regular on-air contributor to CNN and NPR (where he won a Golden Mic,) is an accomplished voice over actor (The Book of Life, Ice Age: Continental Drift - the second highest grossing animated movie of all-time) and this year co-anchored a week of ABC News digital from their world news headquarters in New York. An unusual gig for a comedian, another example of why he is one of the most multi-talented comics working today.   Gleib has been headlining comedy clubs around the globe since 2007 and has toured arenas with Chelsea Handler and Dane Cook. His podcast 'Last Week On Earth,' debuted on iTunes Comedy at #9, was #1 on Stitcher for 20 straight weeks, and his online videos have received over 20 million views.    His first hour special, BEN GLEIB: NEUROTIC GANGSTER, premieres on Showtime on June 3 at 10pm. Barry Katz has spent decades in the trenches as a comedy manager and producer, and in Industry Standard w/ Barry Katz, he uses that unique position to pull back the curtain on how entertainment really gets made. This isn't a theoretical discussion about Hollywood; it's a series of conversations with the actual decision-makers-the writers, directors, executives, and fellow producers who operate behind the scenes. Each episode feels like sitting in on a private lunch where these players get candid about the pivotal, often risky choices that shaped iconic projects across film, television, and digital media. The tone is conversational and grounded in real experience, offering an insider's perspective that you rarely hear presented so frankly. By focusing on the stories of creation and the hurdles cleared along the way, the podcast provides a genuine, all-access pass to the machinery of show business. You'll hear how unexpected breakthroughs happen and what it actually takes to get groundbreaking content into the world. Barry's background in comedy naturally informs the dialogue, making even complex industry tales engaging and accessible. For anyone curious about the human elements of creativity and commerce that collide in entertainment, this podcast serves as an essential guide. It’s about the practical wisdom and occasional chaos that define the industry standard, told by the people who set it.
