Ireland's Young Auto Star Heads to Shanghai | Ireland News

Twenty-two-year-old Kalem Redmond from Headford is set to represent Ireland on the global stage at the World Skills competition in Shanghai — dubbed the ‘Skills Olympics’ — where over 1,400 competitors from 70+ countries will battle for top honors. Specializing in Automobile Technology, Kalem has trained rigorously through a grueling 12-week program covering high-voltage repairs, engine overhauls, and advanced driver systems — all after starting at AC Tyres and completing apprenticeships with Volkswagen Group Ireland and MG Ireland. Selected in phase four of his college training, he triumphed in last year’s national finals and now heads to China this Friday for the Sept. 22–27 event, chasing gold, silver, bronze, or even a “Medallion of Excellence.” Beyond medals, he’s excited to network, share Irish culture, and soak in the global experience — no singing required.
