Studs and Spikes: Denis Cussen's Sporting Legacy

Studs and Spikes unveils Denis Cussen, Irelands fastest sprinter born in 1901, whose career spanned rugby, athletics, and sports medicine. The book, written by Limerick author Des Ryan, was launched in Cussens hometown, Newcastle West, just before Irelands Six Nations match against England. Cussen earned fifteen caps for Ireland in rugby from 1921 to 1927, helping secure two Five Nations titles. He also played for the Barbarians club in 1926 and 1927. In athletics, he excelled at the 1924 Tailteann Games and made history in 1928 as the first Irishman to run 100 yards in under ten seconds. After qualifying as a doctor in 1925, Cussen moved to London and shifted to sports medicine, helping found key groups and serving as chief medical officer for Britains Olympic teams in 1956 and 1960, plus Englands Commonwealth squad in 1958. The book is available at OMahonys Booksellers on OConnell Street in Limerick City.
