Palisades Fire Survivors Fight for Their Homes: A Battle Against Luxury Development

Residents of the Palisades Bowl Mobile Home Park, displaced by the Palisades Fire, are now grappling with property owners aiming to sell the land for luxury development. The owners have marketed the burned-out site as a prime coastal opportunity, disregarding the fact that every lot belonged to individual homeowners. This rent-controlled park provided some of the areas only affordable housing.

For over a year, the residents have tirelessly worked to protect their rights, forming a nonprofit and collaborating with city and county officials to prevent rezoning for commercial use. Local laws safeguard the parks status, making it challenging to transform into high-end projects.

The fight has retraumatized fire survivors who merely wish to return home. Residents feel dismissed and overlooked, particularly after their good-faith efforts to buy back their spaces were unanswered. Mayor Karen Bass and county Supervisor Lindsey Horvath support their return, with Horvath promising to utilize every legal tool available and emphasizing state protections for tenants in such situations.

The group fears that court may be their only recourse to initiate talks, as property owners have not responded to requests for comment, leaving the future of these affordable lots uncertain.
