The logarithmic advantage of beginners

The logarithmic advantage of beginners

Author: Fluent in 3 Months August 26, 2025 Duration: 5:24

In this episode of the Travel and Language Hacking podcast, I talk about the unique advantage that beginners have when learning a new language. Unlike exponential growth, where progress starts slowly and then speeds up over time, language learning often follows a logarithmic curve. This means that at the very beginning, improvements happen quickly and dramatically, but they gradually level off as you advance. I share how this applies not only to languages but also to other skills, like my current half-marathon training, where early improvements are huge compared to the tiny gains professionals work years to achieve.

I also reflect on my own experiences as both a beginner and an advanced learner. While it takes tremendous effort for me to make even small progress in a language like Spanish at my current level, starting a new language allows me to see explosive growth. That’s why I encourage learners to appreciate and enjoy being beginners. The difference between what you know now and what you could achieve in just a few months can be massive. So, embrace the beginner stage, take advantage of that rapid growth, and remember that your logarithmic curve is your superpower in language learning.

Language & Travel Hacking, from the team behind Fluent in 3 Months, lives in those messy, authentic, and profoundly rewarding moments. Host Benny Lewis, a nomadic polyglot and best-selling author, doesn’t just theorize from a studio; he records from the road, sharing raw, real-time experiences and the practical strategies that actually work when you’re navigating a foreign market or building confidence in a new tongue. Each episode feels like a candid chat with a well-traveled friend who’s made all the mistakes so you don’t have to. This podcast is built on the idea that fluency and cultural connection aren’t distant goals reserved for the gifted, but accessible skills you can hack through smart, intentional practice. It’s for anyone who believes that the deepest way to explore a place is through its language, and that every journey is an opportunity to reshape how you see the world-and yourself.
