Suicide 3: The Great Darkness

Suicide 3: The Great Darkness

Author: Lemonada Media November 4, 2020 Duration: 58:47
In his TED Talk, “Be Human(e),” Dr. Jeremy Richman said, “We felt the world was spinning out of control and that if we didn't find something to hold on to, some reason to go on, that we'd get spun right off into this great darkness.” Jeremy delivered this message as both a neuroscientist and a grieving father. He lost his 6 yr old daughter, Avielle, in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. This was one of his last public appearances before he died by suicide on March 29th, 2019. Today, we look at “the great darkness” with fellow Newtown residents Ian Hockley and Lee Shull and explore advocacy as a trauma response plus the toll it can take. We’re also joined by the other half of our Jed advisory team, Janis Whitlock, who provides wisdom and insight on creating a life worth living.   Season 2 of Last Day is created in partnership with The Jed Foundation. The Jed Foundation (JED) empowers teens and young adults with the skills and support to grow into healthy, thriving adults. Hosted by Stephanie Wittels Wachs, a co-founder of Lemonada Media who has been aptly described as an award-winning queen of darkness and light, Last Day delves into the profound human experiences that redefine who we are. This podcast centers on conversations about survival, resilience, and personal transformation, often through stories that blend joy and sorrow. For its first three seasons, the focus was on examining the "last day" within the context of widespread societal epidemics, a heavy but crucial exploration. Now, Stephanie herself felt a shift was necessary, signaling an evolution in the show's direction. Each episode features a different guest, and through these intimate discussions, listeners are invited into raw, honest accounts of pivotal moments. The tone is conversational yet deeply thoughtful, avoiding simple answers in favor of nuanced understanding. It’s a Last Day podcast that sits comfortably at the intersection of society and culture, asking how we navigate life after everything changes. You’ll hear laughter, tears, and the quiet revelations that come from people recounting the events that shaped them, all framed by Stephanie’s empathetic and insightful guidance. The series doesn’t shy away from complexity, instead finding the universal threads in uniquely personal journeys.
