Tires age due to a combination of factors, including exposure to environmental conditions, the materials they are made from, and how they are used. Here are some key points on how tires age:

  1. Oxidation: Over time, exposure to oxygen and ozone in the air causes the rubber compounds in tires to degrade. This process, known as oxidation, makes the rubber harder and less flexible, leading to cracks and a decrease in performance.
  2. UV Exposure: Ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight can break down the chemical bonds in tire rubber, causing the tires to become brittle and crack. This is especially problematic for tires that are not regularly used and are stored outside.
  3. Heat: Exposure to high temperatures accelerates the aging process of tires. Heat causes the rubber to lose elasticity and strength more quickly. Tires used in hot climates or on vehicles that generate a lot of heat (e.g., heavy trucks) age faster.
  4. Physical Wear: Regular use leads to physical wear and tear, which contributes to the aging process. The tread wears down, and the internal structure can become compromised due to impacts, punctures, and general use.
  5. Storage Conditions: How tires are stored significantly affects their aging. Tires stored in cool, dry, and dark conditions age more slowly compared to those exposed to heat, moisture, and light.
  6. Chemical Exposure: Exposure to certain chemicals, oils, and solvents can accelerate the aging process of tires by breaking down the rubber compounds.
  7. Maintenance: Proper tire maintenance, including regular inflation, alignment, and rotation, can help slow the aging process. Neglecting these aspects can lead to uneven wear and faster deterioration.

Signs of Aging Tires

  • Cracking: Visible cracks on the sidewalls or between the treads are a common sign of aging.
  • Hardening: The rubber becomes harder and less flexible, reducing the tire's grip on the road.
  • Deformation: Bulges or deformities in the tire structure can indicate internal damage and aging.
  • Tread Wear: Worn-down treads reduce traction and can be a sign of an aged tire.

Recommendations

  • Regular Inspections: Have your tires inspected regularly by a professional, especially if they are over five years old.
  • Replacement: Tires should generally be replaced every six to ten years, regardless of their appearance, to ensure safety and performance.
  • Proper Storage: If storing tires for an extended period, keep them in a cool, dry, and dark place to slow the aging process.

Understanding how tires age can help you maintain them better and ensure your safety on the road.
