65. Stigma's About The LGBTQ+ Community

65. Stigma's About The LGBTQ+ Community

Author: LGBTQ+ Podcast by Jojo & Dayra May 8, 2023 Duration: 1:06:53

Why are there so many stigmas towards the LGBTQ+ community? I’m sure we’ve all heard the following statements...

  • “Homosexuality is a choice”

  • “You can’t be queer and religious”

  • “All bisexuals are promiscuous”

And many more! Before the 1970s, most stereotypes about the LGBTQ+ community were extremely negative, doctors believed if you were gay, you suffered from a mental disorder. In 1973, the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality as a mental disorder, but then replaced it with "sexual orientation disturbance." Then in 1987, the (DSM) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders removed homosexuality from their list.

We also dive into stigmas regarding HIV. For as long as HIV has existed in the public eye, it has been associated with the LGBTQ+ community. We are excited to share that we are partnering up with The Black Aids Institute.

The Black Aids institute is dedicated to ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the Black community. Some of you may be thinking to yourself “HIV doesn’t affect me because I’m a lesbian who dates women only”. However, today there are more than 1.1 million people living with HIV in the U.S and 23% of them are women.

HIV affects women of color, especially black women. This is an important reminder to get tested and to get that HIV vaccine once it comes out, we’re manifesting it will be very soon!

Family Meeting Q&A

  1. “I can’t get over my ex-girlfriend”.

  2. “How long would you be willing to wait for a marriage proposal before calling it quits?”

Hosted by Jojo and Dayra, a queer couple whose dynamic is as engaging as their insights, this podcast feels less like a formal show and more like pulling up a chair at their kitchen table. Their discussions are grounded in the specific, vibrant intersection of being both Latina and part of the LGBTQIA+ community, drawing from their own life experiences alongside those of friends and family who are either in the community or staunch allies. You'll hear them dive into the messy, beautiful, and complicated realities of relationships, sex, and dating, while also unpacking topics like labels, the reclamation of slurs, and breaking down stereotypes. It’s storytelling with a point of view, where personal anecdotes open up into broader conversations about identity and culture.
