We explore the stages of development through which comedy material can take shape, and we speculate on how some varied, fantastically funny comedy bits may have been created. There's great stuff here about not chickening out on an idea, when to maybe give up on one, and the importance of collaboration. It's a craft-heavy episode and funny as fuck. And let's be honest. When it comes to funny, fuck is "up there." ABOUT THE GUEST COMEDIAN Sam Evans is an NYC comedian who's originally from Cincinnati. He was in "Just For Laughs" comedy festival in 2014, featured in "New Faces," which is a rather big deal in comedy circles. Aside from his regular stand-up appearances all over New York, Sam has a podcast, adultly titled "Up Your Butt And Around The Corner. " A regular at the Creek and the Cave, Sam is a comedic presence for whom other comics look up from their notebooks when he's on stage. He's also a producer of the long-running, weekly, live comedy show, "Tyrannosaurus." FEATURED BITS IN THIS EPISODE - Gary Gulman - Abbreviating the States (Conan, 2016) - Sam Evans - Opening set for Anthony DeVito Comedy Central album taping (Creek and the Cave, 2017) - Jimmy Carr - His theory on comedy and evolution (Green Room with Paul Provenza, 2008) - Tom Papa - CVS and Airline Status (Human Mule, 2016) - Eric Andre - Baconator (Awkward Kings of Comedy, 2013) FOLLOW SAM EVANS: twitter.com/reallysamevans instagram.com/reallysamevans CHECK OUT HIS WEEKLY LIVE SHOW AND HIS PODCAST: Live show: twitter.com/ComedyAtRAR Podcast: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/up-your-butt-and-around-the-corner Special thanks to Gary Gulman, Jimmy Carr, Tom Papa, and Eric Andre for their unknowingly critical contributions. And, as always, for Salt-N-Pepa, our attitude is gratitude for the fair-pun-use of their song.

Ever wonder what really happens in the green room or how a joke evolves from a scribble on a napkin to a roaring crowd? That’s the territory Let's Talk About Sets! explores. Hosted by New York City comedians Jeff McBride and Harrison Tweed, this podcast feels more like a late-night conversation after a show than a formal lecture. They peel back the curtain on the so-called "science" behind stand-up, treating the craft with both reverence and a healthy dose of playful skepticism. Each episode digs into the mechanics of writing, the psychology of performing, and the sheer unpredictability of live comedy. You’ll hear from fellow comics in candid interviews that are less about grand career stories and more about the specific, often messy, details of building a set. It’s an education in comedy, but one filled with laughter, failed punchlines, and genuine curiosity. Whether you're an aspiring performer or just someone who loves to understand how the magic is made, this podcast offers a unique, insider’s view of the work that goes into making people laugh. Tune in for a mix of shop talk, personal stories, and practical insights, all delivered with the easy rapport of two friends who live and breathe this world.
