Episode 034 LIKABILITY – Kenny DeForest: “Own it…let it be it”

LIKABILITY The all-too-likable and contagiously funny Kenny DeForest joins us to discuss how LIKABILITY affects stand-up comics and crowds. What makes a comic likable? What can make us unlikable? With enough likability, audiences can disagree completely with everything the comic is saying and still enjoy the experience. We discover that self-assuredness, status, and authenticity all play into how much an audience likes or doesn't like a comic. Oh, we dug up some Eminem for the topic! ABOUT THE GUEST COMIC Kenny DeForest is a New York City-based comic best known as a producer and co-host of “Comedy at the Knitting Factory”, widely considered to be one of the best independently run comedy shows in the country. He has appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers, HBO's "Crashing", and TruTV's "Friends of the People." He's a regular presence on the New York City comedy scene at large. In 2017, he recorded his debut stand-up album "B.A.D. Dreams" with Comedy Dynamics, and in 2015 he was named one of Comedy Central’s “Comics to Watch." In addition, he's a comedy festival machine with too many festival contributions to go into here. FEATURED BITS ON THIS EPISODE - Patrice O'Neal - How would you keep your man? She's just brilliant. - I forgot to mention (and will not forget again) that my weekly show, "Late Night Romp" is really OUR weekly show--my co-producer and better half on that is the brilliantly funny and irritatingly well-adjusted Teresa Sheffield. Her Twitter is badass, and she's got a killer all-female show coming up on 6/27/18. Ever wonder what really happens in the green room or how a joke evolves from a scribble on a napkin to a roaring crowd? That’s the territory Let's Talk About Sets! explores. Hosted by New York City comedians Jeff McBride and Harrison Tweed, this podcast feels more like a late-night conversation after a show than a formal lecture. They peel back the curtain on the so-called "science" behind stand-up, treating the craft with both reverence and a healthy dose of playful skepticism. Each episode digs into the mechanics of writing, the psychology of performing, and the sheer unpredictability of live comedy. You’ll hear from fellow comics in candid interviews that are less about grand career stories and more about the specific, often messy, details of building a set. It’s an education in comedy, but one filled with laughter, failed punchlines, and genuine curiosity. Whether you're an aspiring performer or just someone who loves to understand how the magic is made, this podcast offers a unique, insider’s view of the work that goes into making people laugh. Tune in for a mix of shop talk, personal stories, and practical insights, all delivered with the easy rapport of two friends who live and breathe this world.
