Scholar to Creator: The Art of Making Artists with Amy Kells

Scholar to Creator: The Art of Making Artists with Amy Kells

Author: Jesse Fortune & Erik Ringman June 27, 2024 Duration: 1:12:51

Amy Kells is one of 1980's longest running artists and an unfiltered, wide-open-throttle creative to her core. Believing that all people possess an artistic drive from birth, she never saw herself going that direction as a child. But a combination of skill, fortunate intervention, and having tested alternative waters eventually led her to pivot halfway through school from academia to a fine arts degree. Whether it's her own practice, nurturing the education of the next generation of art students, coordinating artists for live painting events, showcasing her skills to stoke the crowd, or leading art workshops, Amy lives her philosophy: "I don't make art so much as I make artists."

Step inside the world famous Location 1980 Art Collective, where the champagne toasts and the paint-stained realities of a creative life exist side by side. On the Location 1980 Podcast, hosts Jesse Fortune and Erik Ringman pull up a stool in the studio for conversations that move seamlessly from the business of art to the absurdities of the scene. This isn't a distant, theoretical discussion; it's boots-on-the-ground perspective, fueled by genuine curiosity and a shared laugh. Each episode brings a guest artist into the mix, leading to talks that are as much about entrepreneurial hustle and visual craft as they are about the unexpected comedy found in gallery openings and daily studio struggles. Fortune and Ringman have a knack for drawing out the specific details and broader themes that matter to makers and enthusiasts alike.
