Ghosts of the Arctic - The Haunting Mystery of Franklin's Lost Expedition

Ghosts of the Arctic - The Haunting Mystery of Franklin's Lost Expedition

Author: Locations Unknown October 31, 2024 Duration: 1:06:47
In 1845, Sir John Franklin led 129 men on HMS Erebus and HMS Terror into the Arctic, vanishing without a trace and sparking one of history’s most haunting mysteries. This Halloween, we explore the eerie legacy of the Franklin Expedition: ghostly sightings around the shipwrecks, chilling whispers near graves on Beechey Island, and cursed artifacts that bring misfortune to those who dare disturb them. Was it lead poisoning, starvation, or something supernatural that doomed the crew? Join us as we dive into the deep end of the Arctic’s frozen secrets and uncover what happened to Sir John Franklins Northwest passage expedition.

Correction 1: During the episode we incorrectly stated actor Alfred Molina (Doctor Octopus in the Spider Man movie) played Sir John Franklin in the AMC show The Terror.  The actor who played Franklin was actually Ciaran Hinds.  Thank you to listener Lara Mangieri for pointing this out!  You're correct, they do look similar.

Correction 2: Joe mixed up Vitamin C and D by stating you get Vitamin C by sunlight.  Vitamin C is acquired by the food you eat and Vitamin D is made by your body when exposed to sunlight.

Correction 3: Mike mispoke a couple of times during the timeline segment and referred to the Back River as the Black River.

Locations Unknown ventures into the silent, vast spaces where people have simply gone missing. Hosts Mike & Joe guide each episode through a specific case, piecing together timelines from the final known moments, through the often-frustrating official searches, and into the lingering questions that haunt families and park rangers alike. This isn't just a true crime podcast; it’s a close look at the intersection of human error, unpredictable nature, and the peculiar geography of places like dense national forests and isolated mountain ranges that can swallow a person whole. You’ll hear about the decisions made in the critical hours, the terrain that complicated everything, and the community of experts and amateurs who keep looking. The show naturally explores how these landscapes, while beautiful, hold secrets, making the wilderness itself a central character in every story. Tune in for a respectful, detailed examination of stories that end not with a conclusion, but with an open map and a deepened mystery. The podcast digs into the cultural fascination with these vanishings and what they reveal about our relationship with the wild, remote corners of the country.
