LaVell Edwards Stadium turned into an absolute house of horrors for Arizona, as No. 15 BYU put on a suffocating masterclass to secure a 28-17 victory in the Big 12 opener. For all the preseason chatter trying to crown flashier programs, Kalani Sitake’s squad once again proved that disciplined, violent trench warfare dictates reality in this conference. The Cougars didn't just beat Arizona; they methodically broke their will, extending their dominance in the series to six straight wins.Arizona tried to script an early punch, capitalizing on a methodical opening drive, but BYU’s defense slammed the door shut as the game wore on. The Cougars' front seven lived in the Wildcat backfield, neutralizing Noah Fifita’s dual-threat magic and turning the line of scrimmage into a toll road. Offensively, BYU leaned on its punishing identity, wearing down Arizona's defense with relentless efficiency and controlling the clock. When BYU establishes that kind of physical control in front of a deafening Provo crowd, very few teams in the country have the answers. This wasn’t a fluky shootout; it was a wire-to-wire statement that the Cougars are operating at an entirely different tier. While the national pollsters continue dragging their feet on giving the Big 12 proper real estate, BYU is too complete, too tough, and too battle-tested to ignore. They aren't just contending for the conference crown—they are setting the standard.
