When a national media voter completely leaves a surging, highly efficient powerhouse like BYU off their AP ballot, it serves as Exhibit A for the deep-seated institutional bias plaguing human polls.
While computer metrics, advanced analytics, and strength-of-record models recognize the Cougars as a legitimate elite force, traditional human voters continue to hide behind outdated blind spots. Leaving a team with BYU’s physical makeup, veteran maturity, and dominant week-in and week-out execution entirely out of the top 25 isn’t just an oversight—it’s a masterclass in lazy evaluation. It exposes how out of touch certain media members are with the actual landscape of the sport, clinging to brand-name comfort zones instead of rewarding teams that control the line of scrimmage and stack up high-stakes wins.
Fortunately, the Cougars don't need validation from a single flawed ballot to prove who they are. While voters scramble to catch up to reality, Kalani Sitake’s squad uses that exact kind of disrespect as fuel to dismantle opponents on the field. The tape speaks for itself, and when the dust settles, no missed vote on a single writer's ballot can mask the undeniable dominance happening in Provo.
