The Phoenix Suns’ 2018 draft gamble backfired in epic fashion—passing on Luka Doncic for Deandre Ayton, a move fueled by concerns about overlapping skill sets and owner Robert Sarver’s pre-determined decision. Now, with Doncic dominating the league and Ayton bouncing between teams, the missed opportunity haunts the franchise. Former coach Igor Kokoskov, who’d coached Doncic internationally, insists they should’ve taken him—and recalls how Sarver allegedly knew the pick before the draft even ended. One wrong choice, and the Suns’ trajectory could’ve been rewritten.
