30. The Julies

30. The Julies

Author: Markly Morrison September 24, 2020 Duration: 30:00
The Julies were a band formed in the early 90s in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. The band had already broken up by the time their EP “Lovelife” was released on the indie Christian label Flying Tart, but the small amount of music they created made an impact on me, a guy I recently met named Jason, and countless dozens on top of that. “Lovelife” has recently been reissued on vinyl by Lost in Ohio, among with a digital and limited cassette release of the band’s demo “January.” I spoke with the band’s lead singer and song writer, Chris Newkirk, about his time in this project, “Christian pick-up-lines,” a whole other sort of “music charts,” and pointers on how (not) to appeal to a shoegaze label. If you’ve never heard the Julies, you’re in for a real treat. If you’re already a fan, what’s up fam, this one’s for us!A lot of time goes into this, and it’s nice to know folks appreciate it!I challenge you to share this episode with somebody who you think will enjoy it.Also, if you have time, please leave a rating and review on Apple podcasts. If you LOVE this show, please consider making flexible monthly donations at patreon.com/lowprofile to help me and my family out. There’s a whole world of essential music made by people who never became household names. Low Profile with Markly Morrison seeks out those artists, producers, and behind-the-scenes figures, blending their stories with the music they created. Host Markly Morrison, an audio journalist and musician based in Olympia, Washington, approaches these conversations as oral history-less about fame and more about the craft, the context, and the often overlooked contributions that shaped sounds we love. You’ll hear intimate, detailed interviews that pull back the curtain on influential work, paired with the tracks that define these careers. The show originates as a radio program on KAOS 89.3 FM but finds its enduring home as a podcast distributed by Ruinous Media, allowing these deep-dive stories to be savored anytime. Each episode is a chance to discover not just new music, but the rich human experiences behind it, focusing on the genuine artistry that exists far from the glare of the mainstream spotlight. This podcast is for anyone who believes the most compelling stories in music are often the ones you haven’t heard yet.
