44. Sean O'Hagan

Season 4 Finale: The incomparable Sean O’Hagan’s first major band was the Irish 1980s pop group Microdisney. After that group disbanded, he started recording with his next project, the High Llamas, who released some of the most beautiful pop music of the last 30 years. This is a song “The Hot Revivalist” from their 1996 album Hawaii. Recently, he has dropped the High Llamas moniker in favor of his own name. The latest Sean O’Hagan album is “Radum Calls, Radum Calls.” No, there’s not an echo in here. Sean and I speak about the stylistic transitions between his projects, joining the band Stereolab, working with Bonnie Prince Billy, how he came to be one of the today’s most in-demand musical arrangers, his recent bout with cancer, and his love of soul music. After the interview, he shares an exclusive recording he and his daughter Livvy made specifically for this episode, and I share my gratitude for all the terrific people who contributed to this amazing season. Sean spoke to me from his home in England earlier this year. Thanks to Taylor W. There’s a whole world of essential music made by people who never became household names. Low Profile with Markly Morrison seeks out those artists, producers, and behind-the-scenes figures, blending their stories with the music they created. Host Markly Morrison, an audio journalist and musician based in Olympia, Washington, approaches these conversations as oral history-less about fame and more about the craft, the context, and the often overlooked contributions that shaped sounds we love. You’ll hear intimate, detailed interviews that pull back the curtain on influential work, paired with the tracks that define these careers. The show originates as a radio program on KAOS 89.3 FM but finds its enduring home as a podcast distributed by Ruinous Media, allowing these deep-dive stories to be savored anytime. Each episode is a chance to discover not just new music, but the rich human experiences behind it, focusing on the genuine artistry that exists far from the glare of the mainstream spotlight. This podcast is for anyone who believes the most compelling stories in music are often the ones you haven’t heard yet.
