Texas March Primaries: Incumbents Strengthened, Surprises in Key Races

Texas voters have unofficially decided key statewide races in the March primaries, setting the stage for the November general election. Incumbent Republican Greg Abbott secured a landslide victory in the governors race, while Democrat Gina Hinojosa advanced with a significant lead.

The comptroller and agriculture commissioner races saw close finishes, with Republicans Don Huffines and Nate Sheets narrowly edging out their opponents. Democrat Sarah Eckhardt won the comptroller race unopposed.

Attorney general primaries on both sides will head to runoffs, as no clear majorities emerged. Republican Mayes Middleton led the Republican race, while Democrat Nathan Johnson took the lead on the Democratic side.

The railroad commissioner race remains too close to call, with Republican incumbent Jim Wright slightly ahead of Bo French. Democrat Jon Rosenthal advanced unopposed.

Runoffs will take place from May eighteenth to May twenty-sixth, with the general election on November third, 2026. Early voting for the general election will begin on October nineteenth. These results show strong incumbents in some spots but surprises elsewhere.
