Nickie Gage, a Vietnam veteran from Lubbock, Texas, made a profound connection with The Wall, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. After his service, he spent hours reading every name, personally knowing fifty-four of the fallen, including seven he held as they passed. Born in 1946, Gage was raised by a WWII veteran father and a stay-at-home mom. He excelled in sports at Lubbock High School and earned a scholarship to Texas Tech, but a back injury ended his college career. Instead, he joined the Army and the Green Berets.
