Virtual Fencing for Wildfire Recovery

Texas Tech University researchers are utilizing virtual fencing to manage cattle grazing on wildfire-scorched rangelands, replacing physical fences with GPS collars. The project, funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, is partnering with Cowden Land and Livestock near Pampa, Texas, where ninety-eight percent of the land was burned in last years Smokehouse Creek Fire. The collars, made by Gallagher and solar-charged, started going on the herd last November and by February, every animal had one. The research aims to reveal grazing patterns post-fire and could soon be funded by Natural Resources Conservation Service programs, helping ranchers adapt quickly to wildfire aftermath.
