VE DAY 80th Anniversary - what does it mean to young people?

VE DAY 80th Anniversary - what does it mean to young people?

Author: Manx Radio May 15, 2025 Duration: 27:01

As we celebrate the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe on 8 May 1945 - we hear from children at Laxey and The Dhoon Schools, and students from Castle Rushen High School and Ramsey Grammar School who have all been researching past generations of their families who were involved in the 2nd World War. What's their reaction to the stories they've discovered?

There's also some wonderful archive material from Laxey School 30 years ago - and a treasured diary tells the story of a very different celebration on another Island.

Some of this material has been taken from the VE Day 80th Anniversary Concert recorded in the Villa Marina Royal Hall on Thursday 8 May 2025.

The complete Concert is available as a podcast here in Manx Radio's Island Life Series - Specials.

Tucked away in the Irish Sea, the Isle of Man holds a unique culture and community spirit that’s both deeply traditional and dynamically modern. Manx Radio's Island Life Series-Specials delves into the stories that define this place, moving beyond the postcard views to explore the real rhythms and conversations of island living. Produced by Manx Radio, each episode in this collection is a standalone deep dive, focusing on a particular person, tradition, or contemporary issue with the care and context it deserves. You might hear from a native Manx speaker reviving the Celtic language, a fisherman discussing changing seas, or an archivist uncovering a forgotten chapter of local history. It’s for anyone curious about how geography shapes identity, offering listeners an intimate, thoughtful portrait of a small nation navigating its path.
