Arundel Castle (Part 1)

Arundel Castle (Part 1)

Author: Joshua Potts August 15, 2019 Duration: 6:52

Taking the typical form of William the Conqueror’s fortifications, Arundel Castle was a motte-and-bailey defence built out of earth and timber. The motte would become the base of the castle’s keep. Measuring over 30 meters high, its size could be used not only to guard the river, but to intimidate the residents of Arundel into behaving.

Step back from the modern world and into the sprawling, complex tapestry of a thousand-year era with Medieval!. Hosted by Joshua Potts, this history podcast moves beyond dusty dates and dry facts to offer a vivid, narrative retelling of the Middle Ages. Each episode is built like a story, weaving together the lives of kings and queens, knights and peasants, monks and heretics who shaped a world both familiar and profoundly strange. You’ll hear about the seismic shifts of empires and plagues, but also the intimate details of daily life, belief, and conflict that defined the medieval experience. The goal is to make this vast period accessible and deeply human, connecting listeners to the passions, innovations, and struggles that echo into our present. This is a journey through castles and cathedrals, through markets and monasteries, told with a focus on the compelling narratives that history provides. For those who find themselves captivated, supporting the podcast directly helps ensure this deep dive into the medieval world continues, allowing the show to explore new chapters and forgotten corners of the past. Tune in to Medieval! for your regular immersion into a time of crusades and charters, Vikings and vernacular, where every story adds another piece to the enduring puzzle of who we are.
