Stacking Your Money with Joe Saul-Sehy and Emily Guy Birken

Stacking Your Money with Joe Saul-Sehy and Emily Guy Birken

Author: Leisa Peterson January 6, 2022 Duration: 48:00

Today, I have the honor of interviewing my friends, Joe Saul Sehy, and Emily Guy. Birken. They've written a new book called Stacked, Your Super Serious Guide To Modern Money Management. And if you've heard Joe before he is the host of the Stacking Benjamins podcast, that he always brings comedy to everything that he does. Emily has also been on my podcast in the past. She's written several books about money management.

Bringing the two of them together to share their wisdom in this book that inspires you to think differently about your relationship with money is really special. I love this conversation and we learn how they brought their strengths together to write a funny money book (I wasn't sure that was possible...) and what you can learn by reading it. It's such a great story. I love the giving attitude that both of them bring into everything that they do. And I know you'll have fun with this conversation. Enjoy...

Joe and Emily shares:

  • From Joe: "I think, and I don't know, if you want to answer this also, but for me, the book was meant to be a guide that you can pick up wherever you are in your journey.

And it certainly is meant specifically - the beginning is meant for beginner, but the second, not even the second piece, the last quarter of the book is specifically meant to challenge those people that you and I met during our old careers as financial advisors. When they'd say, I think I'm doing okay.

And I would always challenge them by saying, I don't think your goals are bigger - big enough then. And, it's not that I want to challenge people that your goals aren't right, because your goals are definitely right for you. But I think there's so many people out there that could be helping their community that could be doing more. That could be more efficient with their money. They could be bringing their sister, their brother, along with them for this wonderful ride."

  • From Emily: "You can do it. This is, you know, and if you don't do it right the first time, try again. This is something that - you can. Use these skills that you've been learning, you know. Cut your teeth on the simpler stuff and work your way up. And so, that's something, I'm really pleased with and proud of with this book, is that we don't assume that our readers are not going to be able to handle things like the efficient frontier.

We know that they can do it. And so, it's going to be something where even if you're starting at the very beginning, like I don't even know what a budget is or how to make one, you will be able to get to a point where you can be like - 'Oh yes, the efficient frontier at cocktail parties and feel very confident…"

Emily Guy Birken has worn a lot of hats throughout her career: a temporary tattoo artist, bookseller, AmeriCorps volunteer, and teacher. Throughout it all, there's been one constant - She's a huge money nerd. In 2010, she turned her excitement about spreadsheets into a career as a Plutus Award-winning freelance writer in the financial sphere. Her varied career combined with her background in education helps her make complex financial topics relatable. She is the author of five books: The 5 Years Before You Retire, Choose Your Retirement, Making Social Security Work for You, End Financial Stress Now, and the just-launched Stacked: Your Super Serious Guide to Modern Money Management, written with Joe Saul-Sehy. Emily lives in Milwaukee with her spouse and two sons, plus their dog, Tivo, and their cat, The Dude.

And, Joe is the creator and co-host of the Stacking Benjamins podcast and co-author of "STACKED: Your Super-Serious Guide To Modern Money". He is a current board member at large of The Plutus Foundation and former Board President and Board Member of Partnership For The Pathway. While Joe's "money expert story" includes being a former financial advisor (16 years) and representing American Express and Ameriprise in the media. His real story is how he was a money disaster in his early life, pulled his financial house into order, and left his business at age 40 to pursue an entirely different path.
