S2 Ep5: S2 Ep5: 2025: Week 4 (Dr Sohaira Siddiqui)

Author: Muslim Women Talk Ramadan March 23, 2025 Duration: 51:57
We're into the 'laylatul qadr' nights of Ramadan, the nights of power, and the perfect backdrop for our conversation on women's power.

How and why should women show up in the public space? Our Ramadan BFF Henrietta Szovati explains the relationship between the spiritual self and the social self, highlighting that we need to be in public to find our qualities being 'chiselled' in interactions with others, including simply showing up and being present for others. We also explore what does 'leadership' mean and how this can take shape for women.  And as we think about the end of Ramadan and Eid, she explains how to create a mood board of the kind of power we want to develop by next week.

Our special guest this week is Dr Sohaira Siddiqui, the Executive Director of Al Mujadilah, a pioneering centre in Doha, Qatar designed specifically for Muslim women to study, engage in dialogue and worship together. She lays out a vision of Muslim women's power that is rooted in 'stewardship' and has a role for all women, which they can find in their own way and in their context. She draws on her deep study and expertise in understanding Muslim women and Muslim societies.

And some real gems from girls Hana and Iman that live in a very different generation - where tech and social media shape their lives in different ways. They talk about the relationship between how people look and their power, the power dynamics that exist within friend groups, and what they feel about leadership. Plus they tell an excellent joke about Hijab & Shoulders, not to be missed!

Family friendly listening with a huge helping of Ramadan power.
