E291 - Re-release: Recognizing and Treating Anhedonia with Dr. Vladimir Maletic

Author: Neuroscience Education Institute September 23, 2026 Duration: 42:46

Originally released in 2024, this episode features the late Dr. Vladimir Maletic in conversation with Drs. Andy Cutler and Stephen Stahl about the clinical significance and neurobiology of anhedonia. They discuss its different dimensions, how it differs from emotional blunting, its relationship to functioning and treatment response, and practical approaches to assessment and treatment. The episode highlights why recovery from depression requires restoring interest, motivation, and pleasure—not simply reducing negative symptoms.

Vladimir Maletic, MD, MS, was a clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Greenville and a consulting associate in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Duke University. Board certified in psychiatry and neurology, his areas of expertise included the neurobiology of mood disorders, schizophrenia, pain, and sleep–wake regulation.

Stephen M. Stahl, MD, PhD, DSc (Hon.), is a psychiatrist, psychopharmacologist, and internationally recognized educator in clinical neuroscience and psychopharmacology. He is the author of widely used educational resources, including Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology and Stahl's Prescriber's Guide, and his work focuses on translating complex neurobiology and treatment mechanisms into practical clinical concepts for mental health clinicians.

Andrew J. Cutler, MD, is a distinguished psychiatrist and researcher with extensive experience in clinical trials and psychopharmacology. He currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer of Neuroscience Education Institute and EMA Wellness. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York.
