Scott Talks to Dr. Michael Caparrelli

Author: Laura Cathcart Robbins May 16, 2024 Duration: 17:43
Dr. Michael Caparrelli graduated from Zion Bible College, and thereafter, pastored an inner city church for 16 years. In 2021, he finished his PhD in Advanced Studies in Behavioral Science. Currently, he’s a keynote speaker in churches, prisons, schools & other venues across the U.S. on a wide variety of mental health subjects. He’s authored five books that help the psychologically troubled overcome life adversities. His most recent book, Monster Mirror, features his 100 Hour Case Study on David Berkowitz, the ‘Son of Sam’, a convicted serial killer who held New York City hostage with fear from 1976 – 1977 and gave his life to Christ in prison in 1988.  Dr. Caparrelli starts off by giving a bit of his background as a pastor for 16 years, before deciding to get his PhD after suffering 2 heart attacks. He goes on to explain his troubled childhood with a father in prison and being sent to juvenile prison as a teenager.  He then dives into the case of David Berkowitz, from first hearing about “the Son of Sam” as a kid to eventually meeting with him in prison. Laura asks Michael about jailhouse conversions, and how he deals with the emotional exhaustion that comes with being a pastor who visits violent criminals in prison.  After that they get more in-depth about the life of David Berkowitz, the crimes he committed, and various family members who were affected by his murders. Michael gives his opinions on David’s mental health issues, and goes to explore some of the things that could turn someone into a serial killer.  Before they wrap, Dr. Caparrelli explains the title of his book: Monster Mirror: 100 Hours with David Berkowitz, Once Known As Son of Sam, On Mental Health, & Evil Phenomena  For More on Dr Michael Caparrelli:Email - dr.caparrelli@gmail.comWebsite: https://unmuted.app Linkedin- https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-caparrelli-104249298 Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/cappyphd/ Book  -https://unmuted.app/store.htmlBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/only-one-in-the-room--6052418/support. Laura Cathcart Robbins hosts the thoughtful and necessary Only One In The Room. The podcast was born from a specific, shared human experience: that jarring, sometimes isolating moment of looking around and realizing you are singular in some defining way. For Laura, a writer and advocate, it was being the only Black woman at a prestigious writer's retreat. Writing about that experience created an unexpected wave of connection, with messages pouring in from people of all backgrounds who’d felt that same "only one" pang in boardrooms, classrooms, and social gatherings. This isn't a lecture series; it's a collection of conversations. Each episode delves into the nuanced reality of what it means to navigate spaces where you stand out, exploring the subtle microaggressions, the unexpected moments of grace, and the profound personal resilience that emerges from these situations. Laura guides discussions with empathy and sharp insight, creating a space where guests-from various walks of life-share their deeply personal stories. Listeners will find their own experiences reflected and gain a clearer understanding of others', making the podcast a unique tool for both self-discovery and societal education. It’s about the universal longing to be seen fully while feeling fundamentally different, and how those stories, when shared, can build bridges of genuine understanding.
