Jesse then shares his story of being sexually molested for years, starting at the age of 11. He goes on the explain why he never spoke up about his attacks and felt forced to shoulder the burden of protecting his family as a child. Laura asks Jesse about a particularly bad fight he got into in the 9th grade, and how that experience led him to reveal to people that he was being sexually assaulted. Jesse talks a little bit about restorative justice before getting into his sobriety journey. After getting sober, Jesse attended both UC Berkley and Harvard. He discusses being two spirited and gives a reaction to his TedxTalk on sex trafficking. Laura Cathcart Robbins hosts the thoughtful and necessary Only One In The Room. The podcast was born from a specific, shared human experience: that jarring, sometimes isolating moment of looking around and realizing you are singular in some defining way. For Laura, a writer and advocate, it was being the only Black woman at a prestigious writer's retreat. Writing about that experience created an unexpected wave of connection, with messages pouring in from people of all backgrounds who’d felt that same "only one" pang in boardrooms, classrooms, and social gatherings. This isn't a lecture series; it's a collection of conversations. Each episode delves into the nuanced reality of what it means to navigate spaces where you stand out, exploring the subtle microaggressions, the unexpected moments of grace, and the profound personal resilience that emerges from these situations. Laura guides discussions with empathy and sharp insight, creating a space where guests-from various walks of life-share their deeply personal stories. Listeners will find their own experiences reflected and gain a clearer understanding of others', making the podcast a unique tool for both self-discovery and societal education. It’s about the universal longing to be seen fully while feeling fundamentally different, and how those stories, when shared, can build bridges of genuine understanding.
