Scott Talks to Keith Corbin

Author: Laura Cathcart Robbins June 20, 2024 Duration: 19:18
Chef Keith Corbin is the two-time James Beard Award nominated executive chef and co-owner of Alta Adams in Los Angeles, named one of the best restaurants in the country by Esquire, Thrillist, and The Los Angeles Times. He is the author of The Los Angeles Times bestselling memoir California Soul: An American Epic of Cooking and Survival. Keith is also sought-after public speaker.   Laura opens the show by asking Keith about his restaurant, Alta Adams, and her experiences eating there. Keith then talks about his childhood growing up in poverty in Watts. This included having to overcome more than just being poor, but also having to navigate the world of gangsters, pimps, hustlers, and drugs.  Keith talks briefly about his time in prison, which was a regular occurrence for the people he grew up around. After getting out though he had much trouble holding down a steady job. This led Keith back to having to cook drugs at night in Long Beach, while holding down a steady day job in San Francisco. After he decided to give up cooking drugs for good, Keith took all his money and invested it into the community that is Alta Adams.  Keith then describes the journey he took to earn his Certificate of Rehabilitation. This involved getting a lawyer who hadn’t ever heard the certificate, but was dedicated to work with Keith on helping him attain it. After a long and grueling process, Keith was able to earn his certificate, and now works with communities to help educate and help them in a variety of different ways.  For More On Keith Corbin:  Email - keithcorbin7@gmail.comWebsite - https://www.chefkeithcorbin.com Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/chefkeithcorbin Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ChefKeithCorbin/ Linkedin  - https://www.linkedin.com/in/keith-corbin-34a911165/ X:  https://twitter.com/chefkeithcorbin Book  - California Soul: An American Epic of Cooking and Survival https://www.amazon.com/California-Soul-American-Cooking-Survival/dp/059324382XBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/only-one-in-the-room--6052418/support. Laura Cathcart Robbins hosts the thoughtful and necessary Only One In The Room. The podcast was born from a specific, shared human experience: that jarring, sometimes isolating moment of looking around and realizing you are singular in some defining way. For Laura, a writer and advocate, it was being the only Black woman at a prestigious writer's retreat. Writing about that experience created an unexpected wave of connection, with messages pouring in from people of all backgrounds who’d felt that same "only one" pang in boardrooms, classrooms, and social gatherings. This isn't a lecture series; it's a collection of conversations. Each episode delves into the nuanced reality of what it means to navigate spaces where you stand out, exploring the subtle microaggressions, the unexpected moments of grace, and the profound personal resilience that emerges from these situations. Laura guides discussions with empathy and sharp insight, creating a space where guests-from various walks of life-share their deeply personal stories. Listeners will find their own experiences reflected and gain a clearer understanding of others', making the podcast a unique tool for both self-discovery and societal education. It’s about the universal longing to be seen fully while feeling fundamentally different, and how those stories, when shared, can build bridges of genuine understanding.
