130: The History of Alien Abductions, Part 4: Obscure 70s Abductions with Cole Herrold

Author: Rob Kristoffersen December 5, 2022 Duration: 2:08:42

Abductions in the 1970s are characterized by cases that gained a level of popularity on their individual merits. The Pascagoula Abduction for instance was a media sensation that occurred during a very prominent UFO/humanoid flap. It’s also the first year that a handful of abduction cases were reported. Interestingly, they all occurred within 10 days of each other.

In 1974, The Carl Higdon abduction captured the attention of national headlines, and one year later, the Travis Walton case captured widespread press attention, primarily because it was a missing person’s/murder case before it became an alien abduction. In 1975, 25 abduction cases were reported, setting a new record for the most reported in a year. Aside from the publicity of the Walton case, it’s believed that the premiere of The UFO Incident, starring James Earl Jones and Estelle Parsons, depicting the abduction of Betty Barney brought forth many experiencers, including Patty Roach, who experienced an abduction with her family in 1973. The abduction experiences of Brian Scott became known due to the film's release as well.

Other abduction cases would come to the forefront in the 70s, such as the cases of Lee Parish, and the Stanford Three. All of these cases that I have mentioned we have covered on the podcast before, so it only makes sense to bring the most obscure cases to the table.

Researcher Cole Herrold (New World Explorers Society) joins me discuss some of the strangest cases you've never heard before.

There's a long, winding story written across our collective past that doesn't always make it into the official records. Our Strange Skies: UFOs Throughout History follows that thread, tracing the phenomenon from ancient accounts to modern-day encounters. Host Rob Kristoffersen approaches these tales not just as mysteries, but as integral parts of our cultural and historical fabric, examining how they reflect the anxieties and imaginations of their times. Each episode focuses on a specific case, era, or theme, blending documented reports with the broader lore that has grown around them. You'll hear detailed breakdowns of famous sightings, deep dives into lesser-known incidents, and thoughtful discussions on topics ranging from reported abductions to the cryptic creatures often associated with these skies. Rob's conversations with a rotating cast of researchers, historians, and fellow experts add layers of context, ensuring the narrative is grounded even when the subject matter is decidedly ungrounded. This isn't about sensationalism; it's a careful, curious exploration of why these stories persist and what they tell us about ourselves. Tune into this podcast for a thoughtful journey through the archives of the unexplained, where history meets mystery head-on.
