In Focus by The Hindu: Where does India stand in the Global Plastics Treaty negotiations?

Author: Anja Krieger April 26, 2024 Duration: 17:01
In this episode we focus on one of the biggest countries in Asia - India. India just passed its Plastic Overshoot day on April 23. India is the world's third largest contributor to plastic waste after China and the United States – but it also has a huge population, 1.4 billion people. So per capita, Indians produce only small amounts of plastic waste - much less than a person in Belgium, for example.
What has been India’s position in the plastics treaty talks? Is the country on the right track to tackle the pollution? In this guest episode, you'll hear an excerpt from the podcast "In Focus" by The Hindu. It's hosted by G. Sampath, the Social Affairs Editor of The Hindu, who speaks with Satyarupa Shekhar, a public policy advocate who works on urban governance, data justice, and plastics pollution. Satyarupa tells us more about India's positions on the global plastic treaty. Besides its opposition to a majority voting option - a huge issue hindering the progress of the negotiations - what kind of treaty does India envision? Many thanks to Miko Aliño for sharing the Hindu's episode on Social, where I found it! Anja Krieger hosts Plastisphere: A podcast on plastic pollution in the environment, a series that digs into the complex story of synthetic polymers. This isn't just a catalog of environmental damage, though that reality is confronted directly. Instead, the podcast carefully examines how these materials, foundational to contemporary life, now permeate every corner of the natural world and our own bodies. Anja guides listeners through a nuanced exploration, asking whether a sustainable coexistence is even possible. She doesn't provide easy answers but facilitates necessary conversations, bringing together researchers, activists, industry insiders, and communities on the front lines. Each episode is built on specific stories and scientific insights, moving from the deep ocean to human bloodstreams to policy halls. You'll hear about the chemistry of plastics, their journey as waste, and the cultural and economic systems that perpetuate their use. The strength of this podcast lies in its commitment to presenting a genuine spectrum of perspectives, avoiding simple blame in favor of understanding a truly global dilemma. It’s a thoughtful, sometimes surprising, and always human-centered look at one of the most defining material challenges of our time.
