  1. Estimate project tasks (milestones, dependencies, story points). This involves identifying all of the tasks that need to be completed in order to deliver the project, as well as the dependencies between those tasks. Dependencies are relationships between tasks where the completion of one task depends on the completion of another task. For example, you cannot build a house until you have the foundation in place.
  2. Utilize benchmarks and historical data. When estimating the duration of tasks, it is helpful to use benchmarks and historical data from similar projects. This can help to ensure that the estimates are realistic and accurate.
  3. Prepare schedule based on methodology. There are a number of different scheduling methodologies that can be used. The most common methodology is the Gantt chart, which is a graphical representation of the project schedule. Other scheduling methodologies include the critical path method (CPM) and the program evaluation and review technique (PERT).
  4. Measure ongoing progress based on methodology. Once the schedule has been created, it is important to track progress and identify any areas where the project is falling behind. This can be done by using the same scheduling methodology that was used to create the schedule.
  5. Modify schedule, as needed, based on methodology. If the project is falling behind, it may be necessary to modify the schedule. This could involve adjusting the duration of tasks, adding or removing tasks, or changing the dependencies between tasks.
  6. Coordinate with other projects and other operations. If the project is part of a larger program or portfolio, it is important to coordinate the schedule with the schedules of other projects and operations. This will help to ensure that the project does not impact the schedules of other projects or operations.
