Understanding Your Child’s Natural Approach to Prayer with Janet McHenry

Author: Lee Ann Mancini August 6, 2024 Duration: 15:33
“The peace that prayer brings is that it's really less about answers and it's more about access. The fact that we have this privilege of being able to go to God. And so, as we pray, we become more like Him.” – Janet McHenry.   Janet McHenry is a national speaker and the author of 26 books--seven on prayer, including the best-selling PrayerWalk and her newest, Praying Personalities: Finding Your Natural Prayer Style. She coordinates the prayer ministries at her church in Reno and serves on the California leadership team for the National Day of Prayer. A former high school English teacher, she and her high school sweetheart husband Craig raised their four kids in the Sierra Valley, where he is a rancher. They love nothing better than watching their adult kids and grandkids play whiffle ball in the backyard or kayak on nearby mountain lakes. During this episode, Janet discusses the importance of prayer in children's lives and shares insights from her book Raising Personalities: Finding Your Natural Prayer Style. She elaborates on how different biblical praying styles can help parents understand their children's unique approaches to prayer. From problem solvers to peace seekers, Janet provides valuable advice on fostering a natural and enjoyable prayer practice for kids. Key Takeaways: The four main categories of biblical praying personalities: problem solver, friend of God, organized lamenter, and peace seeker. How biblical figures exhibited the different praying styles (Moses, Gideon, Abraham, Daniel, and Josiah). Observing children's personalities to identify their natural prayer style. Navigating children towards their natural prayer style to make prayer more natural for them. Addressing specific scenarios for different prayer personalities (dinner time prayer, introverted children). Overcoming time constraints and lack of knowledge on how to pray with children. Incorporating personal quiet time with open-handed prayer. Following the example of Paul as an "on the run intercessor" to navigate daily challenges.
