(Un)Well / Social Dilemma [the Netflix Cult Factory] | #28

Author: Bong Toke Productions September 28, 2020 Duration: 1:33:02

This weekend we reflect on Netflix 'Social Dilemma', Sam Harris 'Welcome the Cult Factory', quiet ties between Big Tech & US Military, Netflix '(Un)Well' & 'Down to Earth with Zac Efron' (& Darin Olien), sexual abuse by shamans at Ayahuasca retreats, Hangovers, Cults & more...

Thousands of contracts highlight quiet ties between Big Tech and U.S. military
The report offers a new window into the relationship between tech companies and the U.S. government, as well as an important detail about why such contracts are often difficult to find.
Research from the technology accountability nonprofit Tech Inquiry revealed that the Department of Defense and federal law enforcement agencies including Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Federal Bureau of Prisons, have secured thousands of deals with Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Dell, IBM, Hewlett Packard and even Facebook that have not been previously reported.
Tech Inquiry's research was led by Jack Poulson, a former Google research scientist who analyzed more than 30 million government contracts signed or modified in the past five years. The Department of Defense and federal law enforcement agencies accounted for the largest share of those contracts, with tech companies accounting for a fraction of the total number of contracts.
“Silicon Valley has always been in the business of war,” said Margart O’Mara, a historian of the technology industry and a professor at the University of Washington. “And the specific process of contracting and subcontracting with the military is familiar in the Valley too, dating back to the 1950s and 60s.” https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/thousands-contracts-highlight-quiet-ties-between-big-tech-u-s-n1233171

'I was sexually abused by a shaman at an ayahuasca retreat' The psychedelic powers of a traditional Amazonian plant medicine called ayahuasca are attracting more and more tourists. It's said to bring spiritual enlightenment and to help with addiction, depression and trauma. But a string of allegations suggests there's a darker side to the ayahuasca scene. https://www.bbc.com/news/stories-51053580

Every Sunday, a new episode of RAP Drugs Pod: The Research & Psychedelic Drugs Show arrives from Bong Toke Productions. This comedy podcast lives at the unique intersection where serious scientific inquiry meets the irreverent, often absurd world of psychedelic culture. It’s a space for deep dives and loose conversations, unpacking the latest studies, historical contexts, and personal anecdotes surrounding mind-altering substances without taking itself too seriously. The hosts approach complex research with curiosity and a sharp wit, ensuring the dialogue is as entertaining as it is informative. You’ll hear discussions that can pivot from analyzing clinical trial data to recounting hilariously misguided personal experiences, all delivered with a comedic timing that keeps the subject matter engaging and accessible. This isn't a dry lecture; it's a guided, and often hilarious, exploration of how these substances shape minds, culture, and science. The tone is conversational and unfiltered, reflecting the eclectic nature of the topic itself. For anyone fascinated by the expanding conversation around psychedelics but weary of overly solemn or technical presentations, this podcast offers a refreshing and thought-provoking alternative. Tune in for a weekly dose of laughter and learning, where the only prerequisite is an open mind. Find full episodes and clips across various platforms, with new content dropping weekly.
